Nascence

That night, the world was quiet
when supercilious I
forgot to step on all the concrete cracks,
felt my vertebrae shatter.
And then, peripheral, I heard you
call my name, friend, my name.

Raindrops chase each other
down my window-glass;
I might as well have been vermilion,
chameleon, content beside your eyes.
And yet the drought
persists in shame, friend, in shame.

Tonight, our world is quiet
for I, emancipated,
find that the stars taste sweet again;
amalgamation can only ever be implied.
And I am unafraid to live
since you came, my friend, you came.

(And we will never be the same.)

Author notes

I love you forever and ever, darlings, and I hope I can always be there for you, too.

    You captured how a friend can truely be instramental in turning your life around...like an unexpected light in ever present dark.
    Thank you for entering and good luck in this contest.

    These are my favorite lines! You know I have not read much modern poetry that I like, because often all that comes across are the huge ego of the writer trying to impress.

    But this poem you wrote is amzingly, achingly beautiful! This is written so tenderly you can feel the pain that you speak of, and the wonder of real friendship and love. You are a true poet, and gifted writer.

    No words can describe

    Whoever this is written to must feel so special, happy, and grateful to have a friend like you, and if she was anything like me she would probably have tears in her eyes. You are an amazing poet and as the poem shows...a great friend...the last stanza really got to me

    Aww.. this is sweet. the repetition of friend and the rhyming of shame, came, and name is great. I'm thinking Anna, or Kelly, or Meredith?

      Hmm. Actually, this applies to all my friends (yes, you too, dear).

      I know. It's happy. Me? Writing a happy poem? God forbid!
