[ I live on this blessed land ]

I live on this blessed land
And have watched it become tainted
With crime and sin and rugged guilt;
With blood, the path’s been painted

There was a time before all this
When Earth was pure and clean
When The Great Spirit ruled the sky
Beautiful and Serene

The desert belongs to Navajo
The grass plains to Lakota
The South was filled with Chickasaw
Ojibwe in Minnesota

Each of them their own free race
The world is of their own
Great Mother gives them all they need
Until her rule was overthrown.

Our future and our world were shattered
We were perfect for the taking
Our beautiful Nation was on its knees
It’s strength and power breaking

So only a poisoned people are left
With memories of pain
But fear not, my dearest brethren,
We will be strong again.

Author notes

I live next to a reservation where the Natives are a bursting people. When I was young, I would go to my best friends' birthday parties, and I would be the only white person there. Since that time, I have always been respectful of them, and in return they were respectful to me. This is a tribute to them and all that they have suffered.

    I love!

You can tell you've been around native people. I love this poem. It's got some great lines in it. The beginning stanza is awesome, and I love "great mother gives them all they need, until her rule was overthrown." And the last stanza is great too... Nicely written and great dedication. I love it.

This was awesome. I loved it even more when I read the author's notes. I have a friend who grew up on a reservation and she holds her time there very close to her heart... You are a very passionate poet and loving person I can see... thank you for entering this great piece and good luck.
