From far enough away, Earth shows a woman's
face, smiling upon her paramour,
the Moon. She tucks her chin, hmmm-ing here
and there, preening in the mirror-sun,
and frowns. Those lines that web her fruitful lands,
those blotches growing from each river-juncture…
age spots, perhaps?…no, a noxious cancer
threatening the treasures of her sands,
the clarity of turquoise seas. She glances
up. He cannot see. So in deep blood-darks,
hidden in the night, glowing sparks
erupt, erase the lines with laser-lances,
blot the blotches. For a few long days
(a thousand years apiece) she hides her scars,
averts her face from wondering, watching stars,
hides purpled bruises beneath thick, silken haze.
When surgery has healed her naked noon,
now smooth, unmarked, in virginal undress,
again she turns her smiling emptiness
upon her lusty paramour, the Moon.

The rhyme is so natural and full of grace as to unnoticed bring a sense of flow and form to the words that pace the page. This dance of love that holds the moon and earth in embrace is so well imaged in your poem that I slid easily from phrase to phase eager to see what it was you had to say. I puzzled for a moment at what could bring the earht to bald and shiny grace and then I realized that man had laid all to waste. Still the moon would love her man even comatose n the ICU. The sun would still dance and help her change her clothes to show how much she cared long after the earth had little to share. VEry well done.

Thanks for the comments. Lyrical themselves, their own dance of love. Much appreciated and enjoyed.

A great metaphor to describe the wounds we inflict upon the earth. Too bad we are not as ashamed as she is in this poem.
