Cat-Like Grace

I see a rat
I pounce
I kill
I leave it.

I see another cat
so I strut my stuff
showing off my shining fur
gleaming from my forever cleaning.

I see a window,
way above the ground,
slightly cracked open,
and I know it-
this is my destiny.

  I leap
    I catch
        I scrabble forward

Sliding through the tight space-
but no,
my hip is caught;
the other cat laughs
and leaves me hanging here.

Author notes

This poem is inspired by a picture of a cat breaking into a house by squeezing through the window. Enjoy.
