What have we done to the young`uns again
Pain they bring home makes old veterans moan
Their bodies are sound emotions to mend
The fragile mind retreats into safe zones
Self preservation rules, kill or be killed
At such a young age overcome with rage
Just try to hold on to your mind until
Relaxation is with you as you age
It was over there where your mind was scarred
Fill your memory with serenity
Now that you are home those thoughts should be barred
Yours for the taking, should be more beauty
Now you are back home where taxes abound
So glad to see that you are still around
Author notes
I had a young soldier in my cab
Had just returned from wartorn Iraq

There is no way to avoid the last vestages of childhood being torn away from boys (and these days girls) who've barely made the transition from child to adult when they have been in the midst of war. Your piece brings that fact to the raw forefront. Thanks so much for entering my contest!
