Where is God on the battlefield
Where is a lost soul to go
Lost and alone without a home
When lives drain as blood flows
Where is God on the battlefield
When men lay dying alone
As the bombs fall and they absorb it all
There are no sins to atone
Where is God on the battlefield
As I pray to stanch the flow
Another father lost
I prayed, but he had to go
"Heavenly Father who art above
Gather the souls so lost
Take them from the battlefield
They've paid the price of freedoms cost"
"I want you daddy."
"Come home safe and sound."
"I love you daddy."
"I need you around,"
...And then one day you receive a call
"I'm Capt Ulmstead," he said;
"Your Fathers dead."
Your whole world crashes
You've lost it all
Even the walls collide
as the roof falls.
It's then the feelings of dispare begin.
"My Daddys gone."
The voice says in your head
"My Daddys dead."
Days seem weeks,
a week seems without end
The phone rings
a familiar voice begins...
"I love you baby."
You hear then scream.
For it must be a ghost
or a bad dream.
It's Daddy!!
"Daddy!" "Daddy!"
you cry...
"You didn't die!"
Now heaven has spoken
Returning your Daddy
No longer will you scream.
God heard your prayer filled dreams.
Where is a lost soul to go
Lost and alone without a home
When lives drain as blood flows
Where is God on the battlefield
When men lay dying alone
As the bombs fall and they absorb it all
There are no sins to atone
Where is God on the battlefield
As I pray to stanch the flow
Another father lost
I prayed, but he had to go
"Heavenly Father who art above
Gather the souls so lost
Take them from the battlefield
They've paid the price of freedoms cost"
"I want you daddy."
"Come home safe and sound."
"I love you daddy."
"I need you around,"
...And then one day you receive a call
"I'm Capt Ulmstead," he said;
"Your Fathers dead."
Your whole world crashes

Dear Linda
Everytime I enter Camp Pendelton, I see the Wounded Warrior care center. That center filled with hero's is so heart rendering to see. You wish with all your heart to turn the tide of pain and misery aside and know with your mind that you cannot. There are still Vietnam Veterans in our hospitals, forever confined to the white walls and starched gowns. They will pass in review there in the dark of some forgotten night and their shadow will never see the light of the sun. Another Father Lost...

Amazing and Heartfelt!!!
Good Morning,
Your words really pull at the heartstrings this morning. The picture and your words bring a tear to my eyes. I know in my heart I support our troops 120% but how I wish they would come home safe and soon. But with things flaring up in Afghanistan now it will be awhile. Your words have so much truth in them and such heartbreak. Thank you for the service you gave our country and the care you give our troops now. Thank you for sharing this beautiful poem.
God Bless You,
God Bless Our Troops,
Sandy

Absolutely beautiful and the emotion is excellently apparant, I almost would have maybe found a different way of continuing the poem however- maybe sticking to 'where was god on the battlefield'. But either way, very well written. Thank you for entering.

An Excellent Composition! Well written and versed, but more importantly, Heartfelt and Sincere! Well Done!

Oh . . .
This has left a lump in my throat, Chuck. The photo is incredible and says so much and then your words begin to flow until the final wrap up where there is finally hope in an answered prayer. I'm praying for answered prayer right now! Thanks for the inspiration! Love to you, Dear Friend! Keep up the good work. Long way to go yet.--Kel

WOW! War is not only a hot topic in politics, but I think the emotional side is sometimes forgotten. You did an absolutly amazing job brining that back in to light. Wonderful!!!

Quite a heart wrenching storyline....... love the ending!

Powerful
I wish it could always end like this. Beautiful story, my friend.
Thanks for your comment on my new poem, and I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. I'm sure his life was much richer for having you in his life.
I hope you're doing well, Chuck.
Your friend,
Mark

I wish this war would end. We've lost a few young
men from our area as well. Lovely tribute.
This one brought tears to my eyes, no one should
lose their daddy like that.

The picture just about did me in before I even got the poem read. No parent should ever have to kiss their child good bye while wondering if this will be the time they give their life for their country or the freedoms for another. If only all daddy's (and mommy's) were returned from the wars. You wrote a very beautiful poem, thank you for sharing it.
-
This is one awesome write! I'm glad you ended with God returning the Daddy. Simply a masterpiece!!!

There is something about words. In expert hands, manipulated deftly, they take you prisoner, wind themselves around your limbs like spider silk and when you’re so enthralled you cannot move, they pierce your skin, blood numb then enter your thoughts… Inside you, they work their magic. Thank you for sharing and best wishes to you. Keep that pen handy dear poet. ~Midnight Lace
