Shows the miracle in the present
Times when miracles are lost
Flickering hope of love and care
Burning almost ready to die out
Far in the jungles of Northern Kenya
The nature takes it’s set course
With a sudden twist of fete
Where a lioness opens her heart
Heart of a true mother
A lonely lioness living in the forests
with only loneliness as her company
She suddenly finds another reason to smile
A little baby oryx antelope roaming lost
Oblivious of the rules of nature
Baby approaches the raving lioness
To world’s amazement
Lioness, the mother at heart
Smiled and took little one in
Adopted it to be her little cub
Never letting him out her sight
They survived with no food for days
But how long before came that day
For both needed the food to survive
Baby antelope couldn’t survive without mother’s milk
Silly even tried to suck lioness for milk
Though believed nature to take it’s own course
No one else could wait any more
Brought food to lioness to satisfy her appetite
But days passed she refused to feed on that diet
Perishing weaklings a mother and her son
Finally went close to water reservoir
Drank lot of water getting little strength
On skin covered bare bones
But the time was running
The clock was ticking
Surving on nothing with no food to nibble
No drop of milk to drink
That dreaded time was not far from happening
Finally tired mother lioness just took few minutes
Sat down to collect her breathless strength
The very first time in 15 days
When she let her little baby off her sight
Little she knew what the future held for her antelope cub
Another pride’s male lion waiting for the right moment
Suddenly jumped taking her cub in his hungry mouth
Mourning cries of the little one
Mother is at unease
She approaches carefully but is far more weak
Than the strong male pride
She couldn’t do anything but cry her eyes out
She smelling that dreaded spot
Where the life of her baby was taken
The blood was mixed in the foresaken ground
She kissed it and prowled around with unease
Mourning lioness, mother at heart
She was right all along to keep her antelope cub near her heart
Now she knew her true destiny
Since then she adopted 5 other antelope cubs
None of them survived under her tender love & care
Some died of hunger
One found back to its natural mother
Others slipped through her paws
But she lived on to live her true destiny
God sent angel to keep the lost babies
Alive giving them few more days to live by
And after sometime,
Legend Lioness mother at heart
Was never to be found
She blended away in the forest
That is the hope everone holds on to
For no one has ever seen her since after
The last of her little antelope cub being taken
No body found, no trace of her being alive
Nor any sign of her parting away from this world
So, we all hold the burning candle of hope
To once again have the honor to meet
The Legend Lioness, a Mother at heart
The legend lioness, a mother at heart
An amazing story that is ture to the core
Not words written on pages of fairytale
Or a bible story telling time tale
It’s a fact that I saw on animal planet
The scientists are all in awe
Locals taking it to be God’s miracle for a reason
I take it that this world is still surviving
A lioness like her are the very reason
Keeping this planet far from being washed away
From our own created disasters
To this day, I pray, hope & wish
Miracles like this keep happening
& they extend far into human hearts
This is whom we refer as a beast
Then I’ll be proud to be one
With the hope that this my destiny
A lioness, mother at her heart

The Whales Sonata [for#1 in this contest] new Received the gold for its phenomenol portrayal of whales mating in contrast with the bloody deaths that they suffer every day. I loved the build up of this daily conflict that whales must face; the dichotomy of their wonderful, peaceful paradise juxtaposed with the sad possibility of their demise if they continue to be hunted the way that they are. This poem won for category #1, as it picked out a cause and portrayed the daily life and struggle of these magnificent mammals of the sea who are the largest sea animal that exists today. The imagery was so real that I could feel, taste, see and touch it through the incredible description that the words created. A Mother at Heart This poem moved me beyond words in it’s a wonderful true story about a lioness’s antics in the way that she adopted baby antelopes instead of eating them. This story won the silver trophy not so much that it was written flawlessly but in how it genuinely and with heartfelt emotion described the life of this legendary lioness who was a Buddha incarnated as a lioness who adopted and sheltered abandoned antelopes even at her own expense. Thats Alright Mama. "My faithful dog Trooper stayed with me throughout my battles with cancer. That dog understood more than most humans do and always knew when" This won the bronze for the 3rd option for pet therapy because it told the true story of a dog who gave his/her master hope and purpose to go on, simply by being there for him/her and loving them unconditionally, as most animals have the capacity to do. There are many stories such as this, and I honored it with the bronze trophy because it portrayed a story that has transpired over and over many times in real life - that animals love and save people all the time and are capable of sentient emotions much the same as humans. I decided to award more honorable mentions than I initially listed. There were so many good entries, it was impossible to only give three honorable mentions. In fact, I wish I could give everyone an honorable mention. They were all amazing, and every one touched me in a special way. I cried, I laughed and I learned from all of you. Thank you my friend for all of your lovely entries and for caring about the animals! I want to take a moment to give special thanks to all of the people who helped with this contest; Thelordreigns, Dark Raven, silverstar2.0 and storiesuntold. Thank you to all of you for your great input and the time that you invested in this worthy cause. Also, I want to give special thanks and honor to the Animal Lover’s Group owner, Debilynn. This contest was done for her, in gratitude and love for keeping this group alive for us. We wish her happiness and well-being and I would like everyone to keep her in their prayers. She has been going through some health hurtles lately, and we hope for her speedy recovery. Do I Deserve This? A very well-written and telling poem about how much dogs suffer who are kept in miserable conditions, such as puppy mills, for dog fighting, even for being eaten! It was so sad how it adeptly portrayed that they go to sleep each night dreaming for a better life. [ f ] [ a ] [ c ] [ t ] [ o ] [ r ] [ y ] For pointing out the atrocities of factory farming and that animals endure unbelievable suffering because they feel like we do. Adopt A Pet: It's better than marriage A really cute story about how having a pet is the next best thing, or sometimes even better, than being married! Homage to Garuda, the Chickadee (Metered Mirror-Rhyme) An adorable tribute to a beautiful bird and all of her endearing qualities. Guardian of the Keep This was delightful in how it portrayed a very busy little pup taking the job of protecting the master’s home very seriously. legislate Made one aware of how much power is in the hands of our legislatures, and what an impact their decisions have on the welfare of animals. "Scrubbing Bubbles" An honorable mention for the cutest write about bathing cats and their antics. The photo says it all! I really related to this. A Cat in This Town Cute and clever perspective of the lives of feral cats; their “upside down” lives. Also, very tragic - but told in a humorous way - if that is possible. Alice "Hello, my name is Alice I visit every week I let kids touch and stroke me because I cannot speak, A very moving poem about pet/dog therapy." Blood Soaked Humanity "Yes I meant to use HELL in the form I did..." Very intense poem about animals who are brutally killed all for their fur or “for the price of ivory” real texas chainsaw "the shackles release her but its not to free her" A very vivid and upsetting poem about how animals suffer when they are slaughtered because THE HUMANE SLAUGHTER ACT is not being enforced by the USDA. It does not spare the reader of the horrid reality of what these poor animals go through. We're Not Gonna Take It! These animals are tired to being tested on.So when Humans threaten their lives and their home they deside to fight back! See what happens I really enjoyed this was about a tale of how a group of animals escaped from an animal-testing laboratory. PETA Stance The cutest poem about PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), with quite a twist of humor! A Doggie Dog Life(short Story) A cute tale about how a puppy views things. I would have given more, but I was running out of points. A few of the entries, I was going to give an honorable mention to, but I noticed they had already won an honorable mention. One that I want to give special mention to here is; Black Bear A soulful write about the plight of the Black Bear, and how their home and rights are slowly being taken away from them. I loved the imagery and how the mother bear is portrayed as facing it alone. I loved all of them, and if time allowed I would comment further. All of the entries received a personal comment from me and I appreciate all of the other judges comments as well. Blessing to all of you and PLEASE keep speaking out for those who cannot for themselves!

Just when I thought I had read just about everything possible and I could not be moved to sobbing - this poem brought me to this. I remember seeing or reading something about this; but the extent of it, I did not know. What an avatar, a Buddah, a Most Compassionate, loving One, - the incarnation of purity, love and motherhood. I have seen animals do things such as this and heard of wolves adopting humans - but this almost tops them all! Amazing, and inspiring. Thank you my dear for sharing this. I am so very moved by the story of this lioness, a true "mother at heart."

It is amazing how animals so often ones who usually never go together will help a baby in need no matter what the breed may be .

SIMPLY AMAZING AND DEEPLY TOUCHING!!!!
I have always thought that humans are the beasts in this world and the animals are much more civilized than we will ever be.
Nature has its own way of reaching out and showing compassion and love in its own amazing ways

So cool!
A nice tribute to the caring animal kingdom. I too have seen this happen in real life. On the news after that tsunami hit that resort, what last winter I think?. Elephants were picking up fleeing people in their trunks and taking them to safty with them. I also know that usually a male bear will eat cubs in order to bring a female back into heat. Yet I know an old male bear here who protects young cubs. I live by his rule also. trying to help young human cubs when i can. Again another great write. Thanks for sharing your talent.

You have penned a very heartfelt poem here. It always amazes me of the love animals show towards their young and even other's young. We could all learn a lesson from your story. We are all one family here on earth. The human race. If we can't learn to love and care for each others children like they are our own when they are in need, it's not sayiing much for the human race. A great write that gives me pause to think. Thank you for sharing. Take care my friend. Sandy

Very tender.
You have penned a very tender and thought provoking poem. It is long but well worth the time it takes to read it to the end. I too am in awe of the empathy that animals show each other, in a lot of ways more than a lot of humans do. And they call animals beasts they or at least a lot of them are more of a beast than most animals. I feel that you have written a very excelent poem here but you might want to reread this and check on your spelling for there are a few misspelled words. I really enjoyed this.

Very well done!
I really enjoyed this poem. It was a bit different than what I'm used to, but different can be good in most cases, and this was definitely no exception. The feeling and visualization was amazing. Great job.
