Marlow Manor

                                                 Marlow Manor

Preface: One night on a weekend sleepover, after telling Ghost stories Big John Erlick and "Pauly the Pot" Potter(upperclassmen) challenged me, Tim Schroeder and the Bolder Twins to a dare. To spend the Halloween night at The Old Marlow Manor. This is a true epoch of what happened that harrowing night. ( check authors Notes for History )

Slowly we opened the squeaking door to the Manor,
Pretending not to be scared by making childish banter.
But as we entered the musty parlor, a cold chill ran up our spines
the haunting darkness came as the outside light declined.

Shivering we huddled in the center of the room
It didn’t feel like a house, but more like a tomb.
One could barely see through the dusty haze.
Every wall and turn seemed like an unsolvable maze.

There was plenty of wood for the old fireplace
And I brought plenty of matches just in case.
Twenty candles gave us plenty of light,
But the old fireplace just wouldn’t ignite.

So on hands and knees I looked up the flue,
And I swear, I saw Joshua’s head in plain view.
My screams could be heard a mile away,
My friends said my color turned to ash grey.

Bravely poking and stabbing into the darkness of the hole
Down fell a large chunk of creosote and coal.
Nervously we laughed, as I lit the dried up old log
The fire started crackling after I unplugged the clog.

As night settled in we split up and explored,
Hoping not see old Marlow with his sword.
Each step we took we were sure, meant certain death,
Our adrenalin was racing, and we could barely catch our breath.

As the evening progressed and the bewitching hour neared
A ghostly howl was heard and renewed our fears.
Footsteps on the stairs and the crevasses puffed dust
The old man appeared, waving his sword with blood rust.

As the family grandfather clock chimed twelve,
To our horror the whole Marlow family showed themselves.
Four fragmented screams could be heard for a mile or more,
As four chubby body’s bolted and squeezed through the door.

Was it youthful imaginations that heard a dead clock chime,
Or was it truly five souls haunting us from a period of time.
We told our friends there was nothing to beware,
But I tell you now; I will never again take a dare.

Author notes

I remember when I was just a small boy, my grandfather talking about the Marlow house on Black Moon drive.
It is said that Old man Major Cyress Marlow caught his daughter in a precarious predicament of having sex with the field slave Joshua Truant on the family’s parlor sofa. Marlow it is said went berserk and on a wild ghoulish tantrum, and severed the head of the hapless slave with one swing of his saber, and then disemboweled his daughter Angelette with his Civil War sword. Then for no apparent reason he ascended the stairs and as his wife Alma came out of their room to see what the ruckus was, he ran her through with the bloody blade. His two younger sons John and William tried to help their poor mother as her screams let out with a blood curdling yell and they too were felled by the fathers vicious bloody sword. After all was done the old man put the barrel of his Colt .44 to his head, fired and went to his just rewards. The most chilling factor to this story is that it all happened in 1870 on October 31st. It is said that of the three families that lived in that house thereafter came to harrowing similar fates. At least one member of each family died tragic deaths at the hands of one of their family, and members of each family had several women committed to asylums. There are stories told of screams, and apparitions seen by the families that lived there. People have said they have seen blood seeping through from the walls and Angelette roaming the parlor holding in her bowels and Joshua sitting on the sofa with his head in his hands. At night it has been rumored that lights have been seen from the street in rooms that haven’t been occupied in 30 years. Many stories have been written about this haunted place, I even wrote a poem about my experiences in that house after spending one harrowing Halloween Night with my friends on a dare, when I was in Junior High School.

What a bloodcurdling story. I loved every line. I also read the AN with great interest. Very well written. Held my interest throughout. Love the picture. Is it actually Marlow Manor though?

You might want to submit this to Ghost Whisper they are looking for ghost stories. This is one of the best ghost stories I have read. I like the author notes they help add a deeper meaning to the story. Very well told.
    Great work.

Very impressive way you have used these words in this poem - liked the flow, the rhythm, rhyme and story shared through these lines. Easy to read and understand as well. Like the alliteration in the verses as well. Also enjoyed reading the author comments. You tell quite the tale here too.

    I liked it!

Very bold, "bravely poking and stabbing" come into full circle with "an old man appeared, waving his sword with blood rust" (which is an excellent metaphor by the way). Over all an enjoyable poem.

Oh my! What a story poem that you have written in here! What a scary tale and just in time for Halloween. What makes it even scarier is that it's based on something that actually happens. But that makes it very sad too. To think of a family that continues to live out it's horror, stuck in that house. It must have been so terrible for them. Sounds like you really got a fright too. You did a good job of expressing yourself.

    Great Story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved this story all the way through. It was filed with suspense, amazing imagery and a great story line. Then when I read your author notes, that you actually stayed the night in the Marlow house,it reminded me of the movie "The Ghost and Mister Chicken". I loved that movie with Don Knotts. Anyway back to your story it was amazingly scary and the perfect Halloween story. You did an amazing job with the word bank as well. Thanks for sharing this piece with me tonight!!!~~Toni~~

This is a gloriously gruesome poem, perfect for All Hallow's Eve! Rhymes and flows well. Exceptionally well for a wordbank, you inserted the prechosen words well. A hideous tale in your author's notes too. Now I wish I could see your High School poem, too. This is easily worth a trophy ~ Best Wishes!
