"full of cheer?" -> dunno about you, but I rarely consider myself to feel "full of cheer;" it's a tad awkward
"cry" = simple verb...synonym?
had hope -> have had (-> I've had hope)= continuous action = you still have hope (better message), as opposedto you no longer have it, which is implied now
rest works well enough i think - it's not my style, but it's not half bad; simple = good in this case (I think anyways)
I know this is blunt, but I thought it was worth commenting on, which puts you above most of the other people on here in my book, at least with regard to eloquence...
