I am woman. I must roar.
Though only a mewling kitten.
Independent and alone.
But lonely.
You walked in my life,
Quiet and easy.
Like you belonged there.
But I resisted.
Marry me, you said.
Not now, don’t ask.
You asked again.
I said no.
You fixed my doors.
You washed my dishes,
You replaced my tires.
Just like you belonged there.
And I began to see
that independence doesn’t mean being alone
that loving doesn’t mean giving up
or giving in
But giving myself
And accepting you
And letting you in,
So I said yes,
all those years ago.
