Why Do I Write?

inspiration hangs heavy
in the air, thick.
if it were a smell,
it would be musky;
a sound, bass,deep and resonating;
a taste like dark chocolate
melting in your mouth or
smooth liqueur heating your body
as it is being sipped.
But inspiration is not solid,
it has wings, allowing its flight
to be as light as
two hands just grazing
the sides of your body in their
touch.

The job of a poet, an artist
a soul, is to capture its esence
while leaving it free to fly.
Alike to the proverb that only
when you stop looking,
will you find it or rather
it will find you;
and like sand held tightly
it will fall from your
grasp.

Do not attempt to hold it, nor
clip its wings lest you clip
your own. Let your soul
communicate and be the vessel
to transcribe the conversation as best
you can.

Author notes

in the mood to write, but I had writer's block...all this pent up inspiration in the air and I couldn't get anything from it. Writer's block is always frustrating, but I'm happy with these results.

    Thank so much for entering the contest. You have more going for you as a writer than I think you may realize, it shows here, both skill and hesitancy as if you know what you want to say but are fearful of letting go. this feels stifled, and removed, I am not able to buy into it as there is not enough passion or impact to hold this together. Spelling can always take a good poem and bring it down as well as the flow. If I can read a poem aloud and be captivated by the sounds of it, that will do it for me. But I was held long enough to ruminate and reflect, longer than I thot I would. Blessings and best wishes,
    ~richard
