A Soldier Here, A Soldier There

A little boy with my husband's eyes
comes up to me at night and cries
"When is daddy coming back?
What is war? Where is Iraq?"
I dry my own tears and hold him tight
and whisper, "thats a story for another night,
but your daddy loves you, and misses you dearly
and one day you will understand clearly
that Iraq needed Daddy to help them out,
so that they could rise and learn about
the love of a soldier, and the love of a friend
knowing of true love when this all comes to an end
so say a prayer, and soon Daddy will return
and then he'll take you to the park to learn
about baseball, and sports, and all of those things
and how little angels can get their wings..."
So with a kiss on the cheek, and a tear in my eye
I tucked in my son, and laid back down with a sigh
I wrote my husband a letter, explaining it all
and told him I hoped he would get leave in the fall
and for the first night in a long while, I dreamed
that soon, soon he would be back home with my son and me.
