Thoughts of War, 1944

Fear, the inescapable emotion in war
it numbs a man right down to the bone
a perpetual, tragic and relentless chore
mankind just can't seem to leave alone.

As we walk past the bodies of the dead
life in our worn tireless state of mind
we ponder the calm of what in fear we dread
if in death they have found peace of mind.

Each day we muddle through plash and blood
our bones feeble with our bodies weight
we struggle amidst gray skies deadly flood
of torrential rains senseless human hate.

We search our souls for reasons to believe
looking in our hearts for truth of reason
another artillery barrage and dead it leaves
we only find fate true to mans killing season.

Eventually we come to accept what fear has beget
aching inside, minds exhausted, our bodies worn
life hangs on a thread in wars revolver roulette
fears remnants in mens empty eyes and battle torn.

Will the world know the misery and pain
the stench of burned and rotting flesh
or will this human sacrifice be forever in vain
surely man will find peace to start afresh?

I wasn't sure how rhyme would work with this but it works very well. I find however that it carries me away from the visual impact of the picture and into the rhythym of the verse.
    It worked for me

    thanks for entering!

    Commendable Masterpiece!

The best trophy for sure on this one, dear brother! All
the questions one could ask, and the sense of what we gain, with all this madness! And you, yourself have seen the ravages of war. A few lines of your eloquent poem stand out at me"we ponder the calm of that we fear we dread, if in death they have found peace of mind" It is so well written! I commend you on this profoundly thoughtful write that would awake the conscience of those most hard a soul....Thank you for this poem, and alot of the war dead and their comrades and families of every war I am sure would thank you too! Commendable Masterpiece...Bravo!

So much suffering and pain denial of heroic deeds gone unwritten in the pages of history Horrific conditions they endured as the world thought actions therein were the peak of human torture and suffering but we just never learn and down through time history repeats. I live in hope but know we dont always get what we want in life. This is best read aloud to hear the words as you speak the unforced rhyme in parts i felt a lyrical sense but resisted the urge to sing....dont want to frighten the neighbours who may come to visit your lines. Thank you for the thoughts you have raised and i do wonder if ever man will truly find peace. I have to live in hope. Good luck in the contest.
