We marched through this town
called Bullingen today,
sweet Joseph and Mary
is this place a mess,
thank God, it’s cold enough
to keep the smell of the dead
down some, poor bastards.
I hate that foul, rotten
meat odor.
Wish I had something to give
to the children, always there
in every town, waiting
as we come through,
hands out,
it’s them that I really
feel sorry for, with their
lifeless eyes and
their faces, those gaunt
pale little faces.
Sarge says our next mission’s
a real wiz-bang deal,
something big, it’s always big
to the sergeants and officers,
every skirmish, every battle,
every bullet fired, and I am
so damn tired~

The exasperated tired voice seeps through. The thoughts of wanting to help the children seems spot on, something that even military training couldn't wipe away. I find this to be raw and real.

History
I like this piece. Especially being a big reader of WW2, Sadly seems the young only learn about it thru the movies & then very little at that.

A nice upfront quality of being there.
You carry us along with your story so well.
I think this would also work in a different form as a prose poem.
Thanks for entering!

Excellent
Your words leave very impressive, though disturbing, images and thoughts. My favourite lines:
"it’s them that I really
feel sorry for, with their
lifeless eyes and
their faces, those gaunt
pale little faces"
Congrats, dear friend, and best regards for the contest.

MJ...it seems you and I took a different stance on the photo, yet, together our poems do tell a single story...This is so well written from a soldier's point of view. I wish you well in the contest, my friend. Love, Lane

Great job of pulling us into this place and time. We should always remember the loss and sacrifice from war.
