Winter brings a sudden sorrow
and family grieves
like a stand of winter trees
all trembling limbs and rusted leaves,
somber shadows on the snow.
What sharp-edged storm could not recede
and spare the sapling barely grown,
its keening wind and cutting blow,
too deeply felt to yet believe?
Now comfort lies in the severed leaf
that fell to earth to sleep below;
Gone as winter trees weep low
to a quiet place and wild release.

sorrow, grieves, trees, leaves, snow, recede,
grown, blow, believe, leaf, below, low, release.
I couldn’t decide if you were doing free verse. That aside, I
see this picture clearly. You did well and I'd say the Honorable trophy was well deserved.

this brought back memories of sitting on a hill reading Robert Frost's Birches with a girl in my english class, really fond memories as this is what got me writing poetry in the first place. that hollow whistle of humanity down a New England autumn road that just turns around and shouts 'i am relevant!!!' coupled with a dull hum of resignation to the fact all we have in this world is love.

i read this - at first - and found myself surrounded in the stark, yet hopeful tone of the poem, then i made the mistake of finding out why the poem was written, what could have prompted this and my heart was ripped apart with grief for this family...is ripped apart with the anguish i feel and how close to home this feels. You have, i think, used your considerable skill so appropriately, so compassionately – It is a moving, memorable poem, one that I hope will comfort and encourage all who read it.
blessings and best wishes,
~r.
