Iambic Sorrow

Were I to take a plane across the sea,
And find another life, another way,
Could I abandon you, and let you be?
And ask you to, against your wishes, stay?

This question, love, has haunted me for long,
It gnaws at all my nightmares as I sleep.
I know I couldn't take away the song,
And I would grieve for you, and you for me.

I know I could not do this on my own,
As well, I know that you would not agree.
T'would take commitment none of us has shown
To do what's right, not what we think we need.

I'd never volunteer for this, my dear,
Without a reason both of us could see.
We've lived this life together, and it's clear
You need to do what's right for you, not me.

Author notes

I hope this never comes to pass, but the idea has haunted me for too long and I suppose I need what, reassurance? Someone to tell me it will work out for the best? You just seem far to unhappy for me to force you to go on with this. Maybe I misread the signs, I'm not sure.

Please tell me what you think

I know exactly how you feel. Brava, this is a wonderful piece, it touches on feelings that I'm sure everybody feels at least once in their lives. Once again great job and I look forward to more of your poetry.
