One night out of every year

Halloween nights approach has sifted through the lifeless trees
The sky etched with their branches like blackened fingers pointing
The few remaining leaves, a fiery orange in the daylight
Now reflect the moon from the dew that coats their surface
Beneath the baleful gaze of the moon, something stirs the silence
Soft footfalls and heavy breath, moaning and scratching sounds
The eerie echo of something evil is nearing in the blackness
No warning to the horror, just a soundtrack to another Halloween
The dead have risen from their graves again
Their day of life in a world of death
The dead eyeless faces, charred skin, peeling
Cracked lips peel back to reveal shattered teeth
Mouthfuls of grave dirt
Dank musty rotting smells pervade the air
Life shrinks back away from the finality of death
Grass blackens underfoot, plants wither and twist
The morticians work is now up and alive
Just for one night away from prying eyes
The grave grows so lonely encased on your own
To die then rot forever in a silk lined casket home
The dead just sit upright and allow the cool air in
To flow around their torsos and through their hair
To for only one night out of every year
Allow the graves victims to feel free again
They stand in a group together
It begins to pour with rain
And with the feeling of droplets running down their faces
The dead can remember they're crying again
