Lofted on shoulders tall
Impossibly high and broad
With wicked delight the child roared
Safe the giant couldn’t fall
But breath last, here we are
Liver spotted grip, my hand
Rattled breath; the band
Giant to goodbye is really not so far
Now atop me, the laughing boy
I understand the giant clear
A father’s worry with piquant tears
And azure days of perfect joy
We stand astride today
The giant in he
Taller than the one in me
Still passing down the fathers ways
Silent borne the khaki scars
Heart always close to hearth
Grounded by the scent of home and the sound of a ready laugh
Yet still he knew the distance to the stars
And one woman ever measured
The time to heavens berth
From the crowning here on earth
Of a love few chance to treasure
In fifty turvy years
Not once the rays extinguished
Before a hurt relinquished
With soft words on tender ears
He taught us all
Only now, we find we know what we know
And from whom we have to show
For the giant made us tall
