On Morals and Chastity - Wyleian Sonnet CCVI

On Morals and Chastity. Wyleian Sonnet CCVI
Advice from an uncle to a teenage grandniece.

Now you have reached what’s called, in legal terms: “Age of Consent”.
Mum asked me to explain to you just what by that is meant.
It means your conduct for your own and our society’s sake
is your responsibility, as are decisions that you make.
If you, at seventeen, of moral principles know naught,
have not your parents basic rules of chastity yet taught?
Have they not then explained to you how randy boys will play
upon a young girl’s feelings till she lets them have their way?

And did they not explain to you that girls who lead boys on
are likely to get raped and, like a shot, the boys are gone?
If attracted generally to boys and she consents to sex,
the best lads soon lose interest in a girl no-one respects.
A boy may boast his conquests without criticism, but
a girl who’s free with favours is regarded as a slut.
These teenage years are difficult with hormones running rife
but a girl who keeps her maidenhead will be a happier wife.
The lock and key to chastity is yours to guard in life
if your husband is to honour and respect you as his wife.
They say: "it's best to try out sex before it is too late"
but it’s best to wait and practice with a trusted, loving mate.

So many young girls’ lives are ruined by having babes too soon;
though children are a blessing, husband-fathers are a boon.
Most single mothers have a struggle just to make ends meet
while bringing up a child within a family incomplete.
A child born out of wedlock these days causes little shame,
but who’s to blame if it can’t claim to use the father’s name?
Parents' duty is to warn their daughters not to go to bed
with any man until they’re sure HE is the one to wed.

from Uncle Hugh with much love, October 2007.

Lets hope the niece listens to at least some of your advice. I'm not sure I ever knew a teen who did though.

It's good of you to care, to take time to interject your wisdom. If she doesn't appreciate it now, no fear, odds are she will when she's older.

What's that again? This is a double sorrento hepatitis cappucino with two octopus encompassing 12-line strands? That means it's a poem right?

    Dear Hugh,
I'm sorry I'm late commenting on your poem, as you know I've been out of contact since last thursday.
What wonderful advice you have given your niece. I think it's great that you can talk freely to them and try to guide them on the right path, I hope they listen to their Uncle Hugh, these days it such a hard time for them to go through in todays society with the peer pressure they're under. I think it's a wonderful informative poem which every parent should print off and read to their daughters.
    Well done my dear friend.
    love Bea

Such good advice you've given your niece, Hugh. I like how you've taken each little bit and made it into a poetic yet useful lesson. Hopefully your neice will heed your words of wisdom. I'm sure she'll be glad in the future about it and will come to respect this straigtforward mini lecture

I hope so! There are far too many single teen-age mothers already without having one in the family!
