Daddy bought me a new one for Winter
It's purple with a sparkly hood
My denim skirt is hugging me
as I dance down the street
in my fake fur boots
Then I see my sister
sitting on the ground, crying
with a dirty blanket for warmth
She's not even wearing socks
She's just hugging the blanket
and fighting back tears
A small cup rests by her side
Between sobs I hear her whisper
"Please...any t'spare...please"
She hides her eyes as she cries
It starts to trickle rain
I pull up my sparkly hood
There's a shop on the corner
Auntie gave me 10 euro for treats
I buy an umbrella instead
and prop it up next to my sister
"I'll help you" I promise
as I pace back home
I've got 3 jackets in my wardrobe
29 pairs of socks and 2 hats
I can smell lunch cooking
as I hear my brothers laughing
I grab some fruit and chocolate
and dance back down the street
I pull my coat around me
My one from last year
It's black and warm too
I hand my sister the purple coat
The one with the sparkly hood
She hugs it as she sobs
I leave the fruit and chocolate
and promise I'll be back
At home, daddy hugs me close
and asks where have I been
I say I was helping a sister
and ask will he visit her soon ?
Author notes
Rach is my sister. She is 13 and from Romania and begs on a street near my house. We don't have the same parents but she's my sister and if I didn't help her, I wouldn't be me. How can you be whole if your sister is suffering ? I'm so unbelievably lucky. Even when things are not so good for me, I'm still luckier than so many people. And that's all it is..luck. I don't deserve a purple coat with a sparkly hood any more than Rach but I want her to have it
Please tell me what you think

Wow!
This is a stunning story that should teach us all. You are correct how can we be whole when so many are suffering and we do nothing about it. You expressed that in beautiful words and in a beautiful story.

-
aw, that story is so sweet. It's really nice that there are people in the world who still believe in being good to others
thank you, that is really just wonderful

Wow what a wonderful and heartfelt write. You are such a wonderful person and I know Rach loves you so much. Thanks for sharing this inspirational write this morning if only more would be like you. hugs Theresa

This is beautiful... I nearly cried, for the beauty in your words reflects the kindness in your young heart. Even if Rachel is not a blood-relative, she is still someone's sister; I hope she knows how lucky she is to have a sister so sweet and selfless as you.
This is well-written, with a maturity beyond your years. Well done, and I wish you the very best.
In love and light,

Oh this is wonderful! It's great that you're helping her like this, and this poem expresses it. You are so thoughtful to give up a beautiful coat to someone who truely needs it. Great poem!

how could it be otherwise ? THIS is my little ellie !!!
I have only encountered warmhearted fairies like you in the tv-programs they show on christmas-day, but never in real life ... this is like suddenly finding out at age 42 that santa claus really DOES exist ...
you are the brightest star on ap for me and certainly for many others ...
I wished that you would just live next door to me, I'm sure I would just kidnap you and spoil you with hugs, marshmallows and a lot of gifts - that you certainly would offer to the next poor person you would meet ...
you're the best !!!
I love you, my little sister,

omgosh
that is the sweetest thing ever!!! you have such a huge heart and that is a wonderful thing. so is your awareness of being "lucky", in other words your gratefulness for everything you have. i make sure to just remind myself as much as i can to be thankful for everything i have, because i feel like so many people dont appreciate all the advantages they have in life.
great write. it is BEAUTIFUL!

Sweet ellie belle, while your poem tells a great story, it was your author note that made me cry. Thank you, littlest sister, for the Love that You Are.

Wow, that's very nice of you, and this poem is touchy. What you say shows kindness and makes sense, but many people aren't like that. This is sweet

-
Ellie, you truly have a heart of gold! I am so glad that you are helping Rach who has no one else to help her... I don't know any other person as kind-hearted as you...
I love you for who you are, and there are many who could learn a lesson from you...
Thanks so much for sharing this poem, it's beautiful.
Keep up the wonderful work!
I LOVE YOU!!

Very good Ellie. Nice to read something new of yours again. It's been soooo long. School and everything must be so filled this year. Anyway it's nice to read this. Sounds like quite an adventure.
