"The Greatest Man I Never Knew"

"There's a man standing on the corner
With a sign sayin 'will work for food'...
You know the man
You see him every morning
The one you never give your money to...
What if he's an angel?
A little girl on daddy's lap
Hiding her disease with a baseball cap
You can turn the channel
Most people do
But what if you were sitting in her daddy's shoes...
Maybe she's an angel"
- Brad Paisley

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Bare feet and naked ladies. Broken hearts and twisted minds.
Wrapped.

So you never tangle yourself - - in the problems of others
drifting past the unfamiliar, ignoring the inspirational
Forgetting, once, every one you ever loved
was stranger.

Then fiction
causes reality to fade.

Blurred by addiction
alcohol and abuse.

Laziness. It is theirs.

Excuse. It is.
Never just a need
to survive the day - - for the arms of another.

Brother or sister - sibling of societies stereotypes
to comfort you with what you thought
was lost. Forever.

Divine right to smile
with good reason
to hope
with some hope.

When I walk by,
will you remember me?
If you never knew my name
would you call me by another?

Waste.
Bitch.
Bum.
Disgrace.

If you had never looked through the eyes of a lover
If you had never seen their face. Would they catch you if you fell?

Would they finish sentences...
when your tongue ties?
when the world refuses to hear you?
If every echo you've built
crumbles.

Whispers once sweet. Nothings.

If you knew only ash where the fires now blaze
where today your soul burns with desire.

Would you have turned away from the sunset?
Too impatient to see it rise again.
Never to tangle yourself in it's rays, to feel the warmth
of the arms that would hold you - of the legs that trap your own.

To never look deeper than the dirt, the rags, the flesh,
walk by your savior in shame
lose
- a love you've never found
- a breath before it's caught.
Never to entwine two hearts
or admire their mutual captivation
The freedom in souls
Soaring bare foot
and naked.

Author notes

I don't know....I'm always wondering what it would be like to know everyone in the world. Would couples break up to pursue a new love? Could a homeless man or woman really be the angel I or another are looking for to love? Are we walking by our deepest dream with nothing but shame? =\ It's rather depressing really.

This is a very thought provoking poem and certainly raises many question. Deep and excellent in detail and imagery.
I'd just like to know about the quote above from Brad Paisley - is it a song? haha, if so, I want to know which one so that I can download it for myself

All the best in the contest, good luck

The symbolism and imagery is stunning and beautiful; your use of metaphors and similies adds to the impact of this poem. That we should all love each and every person that crosses our path is something that I firmly believe in and that this poem shouts to the heavens. Thank you for the wonderful read and good luck in the contest. :]

The quote is sublime and the poem reaches out and asks society what it actually thinks. I think it is deep and thought provoking and I enjoyed its style and the resonance of what you ask us to ponder. Thank you for a fine entry. Love, C
