Sunlight glares through the small window pane
encompassing him as he sits in an iron cage
where there's only bars, torment and death.
It's then he realizes that all is irrevocable.
The chaplain sits, studying his hands.
He looks up, “Die in peace, my son.”
Just then, a lever is pulled and the light fades.

Wonderful!!
It isn't often that a person can tell a story with a twist in 55 words!! This is exactly what I am looking for! Terrific job!! I thought you were talking about a bird. Then I knew you were talking about a death-row inmate...then he dies at the end! Just great! You even managed to slip in the part where the main character changes/grows with "It's then he realizes that all is irrevocable." It is a short story, not only due to your creativity, but also fits the definition! BRAVO!!
Thanks so much for entering this!

Thank you for the kind comment. I wasn't sure if I had enough here to show a beginning, middle and end, which is what every story must have.

Scary!
Poor fella, at least he saw it coming. I just can't imagine being in his shoes. Though sad, this poem has a lot of depth. The chaplin may even be more afraid of the guys faith than the condemned fella himself. This was great, thanks for sharing and best wishes for the contest. Avril

Its very heavy, the imagery strong and the tone somber. I like it. :]
