I'm dressed in black with no mascara,
staring at a box;
my vision blurs as I try to breathe
but my heart is stalled from shock.
Oh, God, where are you,
why did you steal her so soon?
All the way up in Heaven,
are you listening to the funeral tune?
And I know that life is precious,
I know that life is short;
I understand each day is blessed
and to her family we must give support.
I know you're trying to remind us
to live each day as our last,
and I can tell you that it's working,
but it's moving much too fast.
I know I'm here to love and learn,
and I know I'm here to relieve,
but what do I do when things like this
leave us all alone to grieve?
The knowledge that I have to gain
from the lessons you provide to me
is far too hard to comprehend
when I'm tossing on this stormy sea.
But right now I can make a promise:
I will live my days to their best;
I will be there for those who need me most
and I will do all you suggest.
Because of her, I will believe
and hold each day to my heart;
Life is what you make of it
and today is just the start.

Author notes
Last night, a girl in my grade died in a car accident. She swerved to avoid a drunk driver and ended up hitting a telephone pole. It really just doesn't seem fair, the way some lives are taken and others aren't. It's given me some perspective, though, I guess. =/
I hope this is what you wanted.
