and shoot the gun,
this is what we were taught
this is our fun.
Give me the knife
and I will show you violence,
this is what you taught
I will show no compliance.
When I was young
you told me this was okay,
but now you tell me ‘no,’
why have you led me astray?
You never told me
that this was wrong or right,
now I believe this is okay,
now I will fight.
The sword fights we played
were once but a game,
now they’re used for hostility,
and you’re the only one to blame.
The anger rolls off you
in a steady torrent of waves
as you look upon the dead,
as you look upon their graves.
Now it’s your turn
to tell us this is wrong,
but you should have taught us this
all along.
Whence you smiled and laughed,
now you hate,
I’ll tell you this,
for us it’s too late.
So give me a knife,
or give me a gun,
and I will show you
my idea of fun.
Author notes
This poem is set towards society. I am angry at society for allowing children to belive that this is okay, that there is nothing wrong with this. No one really ever did anything to tell kids that this is wrong. Theres guns and knives used in all types of movies nowadays, and even in the cartoons that young children watch. Its so disheartening.

So dam right!
You are right and I do agree with you, it does seem like the media portrays a glamorized version of violence for little kids, doesn't it? A most excellent poem that gets the point across loud and clear.

Wow. This is impressive work. I feel the rhyming works well and the rhythm of the poem is not interrupted by it. The rhyming doesn't appear forced which is one of my pet hates! There is a wide range of strong vocabulary used and convey the hostility and anger embedded in the poetic voices nature/nurture aspect. This is a great poem however I wouldn't agree with your author notes on a high level as I think movies are for fun and any respectable parent can teach their kid right and wrong even if some people don't have enough faith in humanity to think it's instinctive. Great write. Keep it up. Amber x x x

ok poem i couldnt really understand where you were going with it. the words are well written. other than being hard to understand it was a good poem. the grammar and ryhme are very good. i recomend that you keep going in this direction. i think that your style of poetry has the ability to be great if you write more of what you truely feel inside. in conclusion i would like to say that this comment has gone on for far too long, awww hell you know im making it long for the points, but at least i read your poem first, keep it goin -

very good and true write, even more than you stated, guns and knives are everywhere. In stores we buy them for kids, even kids under the age of five, to play with, to 'play' at shooting their family and friends...what is wrong with the world. Suddenly we wake up to the fact that is no longer a good game, and try to break them of the habit when their 12, 15, 20 we have taught our kids that, we taught them violence. It is our fault. Great write, strong impactful message! I truly enjoyed reading it!

Your are so right, its displayed so well in your write. Kids think it's fun these days, after all the more they 'kill' in games the higher their score. They all want to be the best at shoot em up games. Good luck in the contest.
