nothing more impassioned in my life have i seen
that such words
could stir such emotion
from such a simple melodic line
and gesture
darling, i'm leaving now, but before i go, let me look at you one last time
let me look into your eyes
let me see your face
let me see the face of the one i love
for if i do
my mind will be set
on what i've promised you
and i will do the vengeful deed
if only for that face
so foolish to allow such manipulation and yet
something so beautiful
something so loved
how could it be that it would push about such violence
to use one
who only loves for her
only loves for that face
darling, i'm leaving now, but before i go, let me look at you one last time
and prepare myself for what i am about to do
so that when his blood is on my hands
all i can see is your face
Author notes
so susan graham is a mezzo-soprano that i am pretty much in love with right now. i am actually singing the aria that this is based on (parto, parto from la clemenza di tito) for my junior recital as well as concerto/aria competition, and um...i was looking for videos of this aria and found this one of susan graham singing it. and i pretty much died. she's amazing. no words.
