War Never Changes

The smell of camphor and acrid smoke
Is getting too much to bear and to choke
Waiting for the cold to subside away
Marching again to war for another day
One long rest and ready for the attack
Being prepared and there's no turning back

Meeting on the battlefield for the first time
Before the blood flows and where murder is no crime
A burst of rounds and the first lines take their fall
Taken lives and natural graves follow the gall
Darkness and cold defines the army's breath
As human life plunges into sudden death

In a split second death follows life
Cannons blow ending all potential strife
Another burst and more pain take their end
To die in an instant would be a godsend
Corpses hit the loam as targets take sight
Gazing at the sky the dead no longer fight

Flags still risen and fogs make way and clear
The air is filled with the smell of blood and fear
Nations will remember what happened forever
Because it is when human thought is no longer clever
These troopers lost their minds in two ways
Never waking from this dream it is a real haze

Author notes

A visual of what it is like on the battlefield. I never been there, so this is not even half of it. It is inspired by only one song, "The Trooper" by Iron Maiden.
