a ghost of past

I hold you still
within my dreams,
a ghost of past
you haunt, unseen
and only in the dark pervade
to scold me for
mistakes I've made.

forgiv'n am I,
yet still I fret
for though he may
I shant forget
I fear my loss
results from shame
of things I did
before his name

You haunt me in
my pleasant hours,
warmth abandons,
anguish showers.
Must you still
though far away,
lay still my side,
each night and day?

Author notes

very personal. when I was in college I dated a sailor. He had recently broken up with his girlfriend of two years. She thought he left her for me. I had juts been dumped for another girl by my childhood sweetheart so I knew how she felt. Some things happened between us and after a while I could not stand putting her thru what I went thru. So we parted on good terms, and his memory and the memory of things that transpired still haunts me...

A Modern Tragedy In Poetic Form

, how I am sure so many can relate on one level or another to the subject matter and emotions within. Your willingness to be vulnerable and allow us into your past is gracious. Wonderfully Written!

    Niaish for sharing with us.

A woman's heart is an ocean of secrets. I loved this. I understood what you said in your author's notes abut being the only one to truly understand this piece. ... I think that made this piece even more special to me... to know how personal it is to you. You are such a beautiful soul and I love reading your poetry.

I loved that part, it speaks to me from things I myself have experienced with regret and self-disappointment

perhaps this is the most haunting poem i've yet to read here on AP...really cold, like a tomb...like knowing someone is staring right in the back of your head even though you know the room is empty

    THIS...

is really good poetry, capturing your deep thoughts and laying them across the page with great feeling. I want to grasp the "hidden" meaning but it seems just out of reach. Very good poetry. WASP.

Great write. I think we all get haunted by memories we should forget. But then maybe we are to be reminded of our past mistakes so we don't repeat them. Thanks for sharing. I was glad I read it this morning. I can so relate to it. Take care, Sandy

    Hey grandaughter,

Who at 19 writes of being haunted, and forgiven, and yet still haunted - a farm girl from PA? It is hard sometimes to forget I think and I pray whatever the haunting might be, that it be exorcised in time.

Wonderfully written poetry again, Abby. I always love to find something new on your page.

Your talent and beauty shines out here...

Precious one, I love this poem. We all have things we regret. I shake off the memories of the past every day so I won't go insane. But life goes on and we just try to improve and make things work... make others happy, if we can. Forgiveness is important and we have to forgive ourselves, too. Read 2 Corinthians.
