In the land of water's vale
old colored buildings
like scenes from a fairy tale.
Narrow streets and big windows,
nothing hiding behind curtains,
like big framed eyes
turned upon a silent river flow,
an almost Escher frontal view.
People, all colors of skin,
running up and down,
cutting the shadows and lights lace,
some looking for the kind of love
to be found in the Red Lights district.
Some looking for food
in the small street-corner shops
where we sat to do the same
(even poets must eat)
I ate great food,
never before I've heard its name...
shoarma, can still feel its taste.
Bicycles, tired workers
from time to time trying to take a rest
leaning against the bridges’ fence.
Past and future at the same place,
meeting in front of Anne Frank’s house.
Goodbye Amsterdam
keep safe your lights, museums,
luxurious hotels,
all well known painters’ paintings
Paul Gauguin, Van Gogh,
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
and all others well known people and places
I forgot to name.
Goodbye to coffee shop smokers
and sleepy night ladies
with their exposed breasts and bellies.
But please, keep safe your windmills,
your shining streets cleaned by rain
old fairytales and legends
and water channels,
maybe in this life
or maybe in some other
I will visit you again.

Amsterdam, I love you.
Shoarma or shawarma - In the Netherlands, is a popular meal, especially after a night out. It is served as pork, chicken, beef or lamb combined with salad and garlic sauce.

Ohh, how very beautiful. A trip to Amsterdam, at 6 in the morning. How I love Amsterdam, the history, the people, the old buildings, the flowers.

I've always wanted to go. Thank you for this lovely piece, and the morning trip, before I've drunk my first cup of joe. Excellent job, and the best of luck to you, in this contest,

It has been a while since I have read your work and this was delightful my dear aunt. I want to thank you for sharing your vacation with all of us and wish you the best in the contest. Love and hugs from your niece, Joyce

I love the old cities of Europe!
