George Clayton Buchanan

Only twice have I met you.
Only twice have I been in your home.
Only twice have I visited you.
Those two times, seem like a  lifetime.

Even though I did not know you very well…
I knew enough to love you.
Love you the way you loved everyone...
with my whole heart.

You never judged anyone.
Not me or your daughter-in-law.
You got to know us before you decided who we were.
And you loved us.

You fought through so much.
When your father died early in your life,
you raised your four sisters
and regretted you brother's death in World War II.
A real Christian,
giving everything he could
and doing everything he could
for his church
and family
and last, himself.

A real mountain man
with a sophisticated touch.
And an even more mischievous side.
Everyone thought you would always live under that beautiful mountain.
A part of that immortal glory.
But with one tear shed,
you became mortal.

I wanted you to be my grandfather.
I wanted that honor.
In a way you already are.
And hopefully will be in the other way.

You truly will be missed.
Your love was like no other.
A rare species, you were.

It all just seems surreal.
Like you are going to wake back up and surprise us.
Like this was just one of your jokes.
We know you would laugh at us if you saw our tears.

If anyone deserved to go to Heaven, it was you.
If anyone deserved to live forever, it was you.
That mountain is for you.
The animals are for you.
The sunshine and cool breeze is for you.
All of our love is for you.

I wish a lot of things.
But I do not regret any of them.
I suppose you are in a better place.
I suppose you will always be with us.
Such a great man, a seemingly unbreakable immortal man...
gone in such an instant.

Only twice have I met you.
Only twice have I been in your home.
Only twice have I visited you.
Those two times, seem like a lifetime.
A lifetime worth of joy, fun, smiles, history, and love.

I'm glad your grandfather was such a great man. At first I thought this was going to be about someone in history who wasn't related to you, but it was not. Awesome.

This is wonderful, and a lovely tribute to very missed loved one. Losing someone who had so big an influence on your life, and gathering your feelings into a poem is even harder.
Thank you for entering and all the best in the contest.
