A Summer Prayer

I’ve gone back to you, Texas,  seen
your prairies now, in the summer sun
of this, my life.  I’ve rested my eyes
on your hills and meadows.
Just as before, in the spring of my  youth,
I’ve bowed again under your cathedral skies,
been washed clean in your rivers
and heard the quiet footsteps of time
pace across your sands and grasses,
softly marching to songs of the South;
heard the wind’s lessons
from loving lips, so calm to advise,
so gentle to admonish.  She still sounds the same
today as she did then
to the ears of my young love.
Your mountains
and plains are still bright to my eye
fair and sweet as all my memories.  It’s not your fault--
It’s me that's changed.
Time came between us, Texas;
Time with her changes, her incessant demands
but  then, what doesn’t change?
Should I be forever yours, without questions?  Without
looking,  without knowing?
You’re wiser than that, I know
and glad for me that my mind can curb my wild heart.

Oh, there’s still the love unquestioning!
There’s still the hearts
that fasten to your breast in blind devotion.
You’ll still hear the old songs,
songs of unconditioned faith …

Just not from me.

    I find it interesting to contrast the flood of liquids in 9-13 with the three plosive 't's in "Time came between us, Texas." I think that works well

    As a Texan myself, at first I almost found it offensive! But after reading it over again, I've realized it's beauty. I lived out of state for about seven years before my return (an amazing odyssey that cannot be rendered in a single comment) and I have found myself less attached to it than I expected. This poem really reflects how I feel about my home, and about how I might feel after I leave. Thank you.

    Wow. That was amazing. I absolutely loved it. I am from Texas. I am one of the ones who keeps trying to leave but can't quite make it.
    Write on.
