Waiting for a returning memory

A twenty-two year old girl stands
at the end of the dock crying
as she waves goodbye to
her husband.
Countless others are there
seeing their loved ones
off to war.
They all stand and watch together
as the ship disappears
over the horizon.

A seventy-six year old woman stands
at the end of a time beaten dock.
Countless others are there,
for her memory recalls them.
They all stand and wait together
for a ship to appear
on the horizon.

Author notes

For those who have lost a loved one in times of war.
Thank you for reading.

I'm glad you liked Fruit Salad, lol. A bunch of my friends offline thought I'd lost it when I shouwed them the write. lol!

I loved the emotions circling this poem. It was very well written. I especially liked the way you jumped from the when she was a girl to her being an old lady. It shows that time goes by so fast...

This was a beautiful write. I never have had anyone close to me, leave...and not return this way. However my Mothers first love left... and he did not return. I have seen how its affected her, even after almost 60 years. My only thoughts are...she will see him again.... when God calls her home.

Thank your for allowing me to read this beautiful expression.
    My best..

Rodney, this was simply beautiful...i have never lost someone in a war...but my brother was in Iraq the first time and i remember the hell it was...the waiting...never knowing if word would come that he would not return home. Even writing this...i have chills all over and it brings me back to that place of pain. I empathize with anyone who ever has or ever has to feel this...it is an agony beyond agonies. So very well penned, my friend.

I really like this poem. Inspired by the comment above me, I put on "My Heart Will Go On" and read the poem over again. A touching, beautiful piece. Good job. Thank you so much for the comments on my "poison girl" pieces. It means so much to me. And ironically, I just ate 3 cheese potatoes the night I wrote that poem! Creepy, eh? Take care, and great writing.

Very poingnant piece here Rodney and no doubt in another 50 years it will be a whole new generation going off to war because lessons are never learned. I have someone very close to me joining the army next year when she graduates high school. They star working on the when they are juniors now and sign them up a year in advance. They are promise stateside duties if they want but in times of war everyone goes. Love this piece, one of your best.

so sad, honest poem. even though I am a pacifist, i still can understand and respect people who have lost people in wars or have people fighting in wars right now.
