For Sarah

When the pain of a love lost

beats hard against your chest

or the sting of friendships tossed

leaves you feeling empty and bereft,

own the pain for all its cost,

it's the only thing you have left.

Pain can mark our everyday

or it can visit  for a while,

it can make you go astray

or give you feelings, vile.

don't make it go on it's merry way,

just accept it with a smile.

without  pain there is no pleasure,

no life lessons to be learned.

it is an experience without measure

that can cause your gut to churn.

it is a badge of honor no one treasures,

but it is everyones concern.

It doesn't matter where it comes from

only how you use it or how you react

Do you rise above it, or do you succumb?

Do you fall to pieces, do you stay intact?

Do you let it change you, or use it to become?

Do you let it guide you, or do you let it distract?

There is no guide to the uses of pain

 it's affects are never clean

It can be used  for knowledge gain

or as an emotional go-between.

It can be used to live in dark and rain

or to live in the sun, so seldom seen.

Don't let the pain bring you down,

rise up and shout out loud.

"I will not give wear the mourners gown

I will not now, nor ever, be cowed.

And when I feel the hurt may just drown,

I will stand up and be proud".

Author notes

A freind of mine asked for clarity on what pain was ok and what wasnt, and where we should get our strength from when pain got to us. I hope I have answered her questions and not created more...peace

    thank you

Terry I made a horrible mistake tonight and all I feel is horrible. And then I come on here and there is something like this waiting for me...how does life work this way? I thought that I'd hit rock bottom, which was the scariest feeling ever and the truth is that now, I still feel pretty low, but the ending line "I will stand up and be proud" makes me feel like that's something that I will have to do. And I have to make sure that I forgive myself for the things I've done....
