Soldier

A draft, A piece of paper
Ruining my life and all I savor
Just ink on the page
In this war, I now will engage
At the beaches of a new place
I walk out of the plane with a new face
Anger is swelling
Emptiness in my soul welling
Covering me, making me complete
I've never felt something so sweet
A rush of blood
A splash in the mud
A grenade is thrown,
Our cover is blown
My skin grows hot
My blood runs cold, My partner is shot
All my sense is now lost
You now will pay the cost
ringing in my ears
I feel no fear
I am a soldier
I need not a crying shoulder
Obeying my orders
I push through your borders
protecting my home and land
As a team, As Americans we will make a stand
So now not knowing your name
it is for your life I came
sorrow? This I do not feel
In my mind, it seems this is not real
Although I kill and kill
I feel no sorrow, I feel nothing still.
I am a soldier.

This soldier goes through a vast array of complex emotions. You have described them well. I find the ending especially powerful. Good work.
