The Corn Remembers

Barren bleeding a fallow earth
Lost groans of childless birth
Saboba braves lie lifeless breathing
Parchment cracks with bitter seething.

Fallen seeds beneath lie weeping
death and bloodshed deeply seeping
Motherless and dry hang milkless breasts
childless songs scar a warriors chest

Painted buffalo and burning rivers
drinking sorrows while earth still quivers
Children buried the wolves come shearing
aching bellies deathless, bitter tearing

The corn remembers the green and tender
shoots of youth now lost of splendour
Weather-beaten ghosts once sacred poles
battered lifeless with scars and holes.
