From time to time we all need to feel,
That there is someone there standing with us.
Someone who will watch over us,
Through thick and thin, success and hardship.
Though we met only briefly beyond my memory,
You have been nothing but an aid to me.
To this day I wish I knew you better,
That we knew more days of joy and laughter.
But you were taken away from me, from us,
So many long years ago now.
Still you watch over me from your place upon the wall,
Grey suited, smiling on a happier day.
I hope I’ve made you proud,
My mistakes have been my own
But my successes I share with you.
We all miss you, even I who never knew you,
Except when your gentle touch expelled all danger.
Though I feel no desire for the end of my life,
I look forward to the day that we meet once again.
I long for the day that I will finally know you.
Author notes
My grandfather (my dad's dad) died in 1987 when I was only about eight months old. I was his only grandchild at his death (now there are six of us) and this is just a little something I put together.

I lost both of my grandfathers when I was a young teenager...I've lost a lot of family......
I am glad that you where close to your grandfather..not everyone had that.

I love this... Hard to believe our grandad is gone so long....
And now another person has left us.. -
Sometimes people don't understand that it is hard when you've lost a person you never met. There's a gap that you can't even fill with memories. I'm certain you made your Grandfather proud with this poem, which is beautifully written and I can tell took some effort on your part. Wonderf
