They told me it was true
The tower set in Blackpool was by Eiffel
but my laughs I could not stifle
a puny looking thing this tower
set by the seaside so flat and dour.
He made the plans and then forgot
to beguile - a charmless squat.
But we now surround the awkward structure
with "kiss me.." hats, fish and chip shops and the odd butcher -
of songs parading in the ballroom
not such a very tall room
still used by telly people on the make -
"A reality programme we must take
to the slavering people waiting for us
to be gay and rude and outrageous,
shining lasers and coloured lights
will give Tower audience such a sight
as to mould them to our ways of wealth and sin
and we make money from our popular phone-in."
The tower stands still, what a sepulcher
its rusting paint and peeling shards set in a lunar
landscape of mudflats and hotels
insipid streets and redbrick motels.
Mr Eiffel did it better with his loving work
in Paris. Blackpool Tower is for jerks.

I enjoyed playing around with Eiffel's other work - the Tower in Blackpool, which, for those who don';t know the place, is a popular but well faded seaside resort on the flat north west coast of England. It has been used for ballroom dancing programmes and other shows on British TV (they need the money!) I beg forgiveness of the Tower authorities, it's quite a nice place really (lol).

This is quite an odd take on the contest and I appreciate it though I am looking for something that would be fitting for a tribute to World Wonders anthology and wouldn't use this. Still, this was fun to read and you still have a day to enter another if you are inclined. I don't know about this tower in Blackpool and will have to take a look at it.
