Metaphor that we adore
slips from our ever present store
of experience and common lot
to describe links we had not thought;
or from a careful choice of word
some landscape drawn, emotion stirred
without explaining every jot
we more perceive the author’s plot:
anemone-fingered touch of bliss
each nerve atingle, yearns for kiss
the rising tension, passions flame
each soft-clung tendril mouths your name
into foghorn night he crept
what dire appointment must be kept
that dragged from safety, warmth of bed
in chill, damp, dangerous mists to tread?
Ambition was his only god
one who did not gently prod
those encumbering his way
within his power to crush or slay
Likening two things not the same
by giving one the other’s name,
invested in concepts of the first,
the second’s likenesses minds rehearse
The world’s a stage,
some rot, don’t age,
his rage impotent,
rascal hell-bent
our writes implore
more metaphor!

I found myself nodding my head in agreement to your thoughts on metaphor as I read this. I like the rhyme and rhythm of this piece as well. Verse 9 I love especially for it's clever explanation of the subject at hand.

Thank you, Everwind Rising, for your comments. I am still learning to understand the concept of metaphor, and its application and needed consistencies. Your column was so helpful, especially about keeping the flow of matching nouns and verbs. Thank you!

I'm glad you found my column helpful. I see excellent use of metaphor in your work. Understanding metaphor is something that we all are growing in as we grow as poets. Metaphor is magic and we are but appreticed magicians ever learning it's power and potential.

Thank you Bunny! I'm working to understand the different terms involved with writing...it's a happy relief you didn't find it unrelated to what I was trying to speak to!
Thank you for taking time to read it through and comment!
