Eleven

With only an inch
til we’re eye-to-eye
two sizes past borrowing my shoes
she covers her ears
and whines beneath her age

“nananana I can’t hear you”

I talk back
beneath my age
curse my compulsion
with the last word.

Beneath the ages... Love that phrasing.
    Very stong imagery.
I've never had children of my own but can so see this.
We can all act beneath our age at times.

speaking from a three year old perspective

you should respond to that - covering your ears:

I have a 12 year old going through what Lisa has commented on here.

Rites of passage are hard on parents

Anyway this little poem really focused in on that
    bittersweet change so very well.

    Good one

Hannah is 11. I looked at her legs the other day and discovered she has started shaving them (without telling me!) She does the mumble under her breath about me so I can barely hear what she said thing.

I can see it all coming. She called me from the nurse's office on the 4th day of school, "I threw up in the bathroom" I was super busy and cranky - 4th day? ??? Course I picked her up and brought her home and she slept for 4 hours and I felt incredibly guilty.

All of the sudden fashion & friends are everything.. How does it happen? My baby is 11?

Fun piece and a peak inside the house of jantastic.

sigh. you have a REAL baby.

Oh, I can feel the frustration in this. I'm sure many mother's will relate.

I dread the day my daughter reaches this age. She's five, and already quite stubborn and definitely has a mind of her own!

this just made me think of a bit from an e.e. cummings poem...

"Not even the rain has such small hands"

I love that poetry can be something completely different all of the time
this is wonderful to an extremity of the word

Uggggh. My oldest just turned 11. While I have't seen a fit of this size yet, I KNOW she is capable of it. She is ALMOST as tall as me, but her feet are still smaller....

Just you know, stay away from sharp objects and remember if anyone needs to be locked in a closet..bring a good book and a flashlight
