A Wedding to Remember

Missing image

           Imagine, the 22nd of December

And my sister's wedding that evening

I had flown home for the holidays

Our red velvet full length dresses already

           For the beautiful Christmas event!

Who was to know the developments ahead!

Gale winds were blowing in off the oceans

The ferries were all delayed from the island

The Christmas tree all lovely decorated

In the front view window, was waiting too

It seemed for the photographer to arrive

For the pictures of the lovely bride

Her parents and sister and family awaited

Little did we know the calm was going to change

There had been a little chip in the front window

From the lawnmower throwing up a little stone

Gust winds increased, and the photographer

Arrived with enthusiasm to take the pictures

Bang, crash, splintered glass, the Christmas tree

Was down and the front window broken in two!

Well in tears, the bride to be was hysterically

Crying "What are we going to do?"

The photographer was wiping his forehead

Anxiously and pulling his hair in tension!

Dad to the rescue, went and got a four by

eight sheet of plywood which we tried to hide

Behind the tree, and start taking pictures

Having calmed my sister down to smile now

The doorbell rings and in comes Uncle Fred

With his waistcoat watch out, looking

And with gusto said "Well I say it is High Tea time!

           Our nerves were frazzled..family guests

Still far from out at sea on the ocean

           The wedding an hour away

Well we the bridesmaids and bride

Had to hang out waiting in the Ladies washroom

As if blown in by the wind off the sea

And to top it off my brother in laws'

           Mother strutted down the aisle

           In a Maxi black coat

With hat to match with a huge peacock feather

           Sticking out of it....Ceremonies began

All went well, despite the dropping of a ring

Which the amplifier made sound to those in

The church sound like a brick dropping

The lovely smorgasbord over, wishing all well

We were all congratulating the new couple

And thinking all would be on their way

Well it was not to be...the best man in his tuxedo

Had to ride the ferry in it as he locked himself

Out of his university dorm....to his embarassment

And come the next morning, my sister phoned

In tears...She had left her keys to her suitcase

Behind...So special delivery to the rescue

So they could enjoy their honeymoon

Still happy, and five children later

And as that day, still wishing them well

Pheew, I feel like I went through that day again!

I really enjoyed how it was a happy ending. I do very much agree that most things in life do start off a bit rocky or people can get cold feet, but in the end it was all worth it and most people turn out very happy. you did an excellent job. well done, keep it up!

Congrats on the gold! This was so wonderful. I love what you said in your author's notes about happy ending with stressful beginnings. Ain't it the truth! I remember my wedding. It was the best day of my life even though it started off far from perfect! Sounds like your sister had a great wedding! Hope they share many years together.

    liked the story

I liked the story. Nothing ever goes as expected. In the moment it seems like a disaster but in the long run, we look back and laugh. I thought the piece was a bit more like prose than poetry but that didn't take away from the enjoyment of the piece.

    LOL,

Thank God they're still together after all that trouble!, it was definately a most trying day, I thought I was only one with luck like this. I was married on Oct. 16, 1998, on a small island in North Carolina..we were married on a floating dock, in the evening at 7pm, well, the night before the wedding, there was forecast of a possible hurricane heading our way, but due to family and part of the wedding party coming from out of town, we couldn't change a thing!
My nerves were tattered by the evening, and though the winds got pretty rough, the hurricane held off until the next day. My nieces had to hold the Wedding Arc down as we were being married, and as my father in law( who is a pastor), finally announced us husband and wife, my husband kissed me and became entangled in my veil as it was blown from back to front. The next morning we were evacuated from the island. We spent the next few days in a friends "tiny trailer", a few towns away, but out of harms way. We've been through many storms since then, and we're still holding on.
Kudos to your sister, thanks for sharing these lovely memories, and allowing me to rant about memories of mine

    Sincerely,
    Sassy

LMBO That sounds like a horrible start to a happy day. But at least they are still together. This is a truly hilarious poem. Thank you for entering my contest.

    Holy Mackeral!!!

"A night to remember" this wasn't!LOL
Such a comedy of errors could only be written by Mother Nature.
They say that in every blessing there is a curse, and in every curse a blessing. Seems that all's well that ends well.

Five kids! Guess they wanted to get that part out of the way before something else goes wrong!LOL

Thank you for the lead to this.
Good luck in the contest, Rose!

    Regards,
    John
