and in that moment, when you looked
out the window, I knew you were gone,
like a kite ripped out of my grasp
by the inadvertent north wind;
so I wanted to be the sky, to be
the puffs of cumulus and the
clammy breath of the coming storm.
I knew your kisses were destined to
float on rivers of champagne and fly
into the breeze’s barren smile.
I felt in my atoms the futile sense
of half-eaten stars and spit-up
galaxies, possibilities of split seconds
excreted beneath the light of this
farce.
That night, in my dreams, I saw
a vestige of your shredded skin,
stretched out on bony rocks and
covered in my arctic, porcelain
blood.
