I bought flowers for my mother tonight.
On the eve of all-mother's day, I bought
a bouquet; a clear cellophane wrapped
remembrance; a rubber-banded spray of
red and white carnations and sprigs
of s-w-e-e-t b-a-b-y-'-s b-r-e-a-t-h:
my way of kissing away the absence of mommie-
all those childhood hurts with all their
"boo-boos" and "boo-hoo-hoos" bought
before the store closes and the sun goes
down...behind horizon's cold, lost years.
Restless
nighttime shadows wait standing, watching
arms that never wrapped their soothing balm
around fragile fears of youth sobbing, unnoticed.
Today, delicate green lace takes its place
filling the space of "Motherly Love."
I bought flowers for my mother tonight.
On the eve of all-mother's day I bought a
bouquet for Eve......................Mother within me.
