Mashed Potato Clouds

Fell asleep in Iowa,
woke up in Idaho
in the bunk of a red Peterbilt
while Danny drove.

From the cab of that old truck
I saw the sun
mirrored in Nebraska black waters,
watched it dance
with Kansas sunflowers,
swim through seas
of Kentucky Bluegrass
glisten off flakes
of Vermont snow,
but there’s nothing like
Iowa corn silk skies
bathed in morning light.

Shared a shower with Danny
at the Flying J.
Water beaded on my skin
as he slid into me,
pulled me close
whispered “I love you,” in my ear.

Later, when he fell asleep
I packed my things in silent rain.
Took to the road again,
as the sun went down
under mashed potato clouds.
