Connection to the Past

I envision people who look like me,
our blood is the same,
and also are we.

I feel the pain of the people of my past.
I want to know all about them,
How long did they last?

I want to know, what were you like?
my far - off grandfather,
whom for me you did fight.

The history is lost,
along with our homeland too.
What was growing up like for you?

Tell me about our family.
Was it loving and whole?
I know it must have been; I've seen it in my dreams for so long.

I long to feel what my family was like,
Each day I wish I had them,
as well as each night.

I'm proud of who we are,
If only I knew,
A bit more of who I am and a bit more about you.

I do not know them,
and yet I do in my heart.
I love them with all that I am.

I will be  proud to see them when I depart.

Wow this is the first poem I have put on here that actually rhymes.
