Essentials in My Life - Wyleian Sonnet CCV - Non-Entry.

Essentials in My Life – Wyleian Sonnet CCV.
- NON-ENTRY

I’m asked what are the three essential things I need in life
and yet I’m told I cannot name my family, friends or wife
so, giving it some serious thought (which can be quite a strain),
I’ve decided that the number one essential is my BRAIN.

The second fundamental ‘must’ would be my gift of SIGHT,
enabling me to differentiate between each day and night;
to recognise the difference between a foe and friend
and, if I couldn’t write or read, I’d soon go round the bend.

The third, but not the least to be without I could not bear,
would be the sound of music and ability to HEAR.
Although I crave at times to have a spell of peace and quiet,
I could not suffer silence as an unrelenting diet.

You may take material trappings and deprive me of my wealth,
but let me keep my mind, my sight, my hearing and my HEALTH!

Hugh Wyles, September 1st. 2007.

Author notes

As I consider this one of my better sonnets and have therefor designated it as a Wyleian Sonnet, it will be removed from contest after September 12th.
I am grateful to Sir Ima Q. for inspiring these thoughts.
Hugh (R.)

    Dear Hugh,

You've certainly thought of the essentials! Thank God you have all you need wherever you go!

I enjoyed your sonnet very much!

Wonderfully thought out and not materialistic as mine is...so if I need some brains to figure something out I know where to come and if I need to write something down to remember it I know who has a pencil ...you will bring a pencil won't you...I don't think a pen will work on the moon and if I get lost in the Sea of Tranquility you will be able to find me...and for all of that I will sit and sip my coffee while you sip your tea and will share my chocolate with you...

I don't share my chocolate with just anybody

Dear Babe, Spot on with your choices of what you would take to the Moon. I would go bonkers if I didn't have all of my senses. I know how much you love to read and to listen to your wonderful music.
This Sonnet is very worthy of being added to your Wyleian Sonnet collection.
    Lovesya Babe

    great write grampa!

i would definately like to take my sight, that one is for certain,

the brain i'd rather leave behind, after four kid its barely workin.

as for the ability to hear, i'd rather take some heels,
me ears are a touch stuffed up now after over 10 years of kiddy squeals.

but one thing i must make sure to take is a notebook pc, for without it i would be so bored, there'd be no grampa, AJ or AP!

loves ya in big bubblin boils!

Cool, I liked your three choices...especially how you reasoned them. What is interesting is how people approach the question, how deep they go in their reasoning or how serious they take the question. Some would choose material objects, others, like you look at the question in a more literal sense.

What I mean is, people are different.

    Thanks Hugh.

    Fine sonnet

Not only is this agreeable, but I agree with it! One's mental faculties and senses enrich life wonderfully, and enable us to make it what we choose. The couplet rounds out the whole - this is a serious subject which you describe with chsrming humour.

    Awwww Hugh!

This is a cracker! I think this is your best sonnet EVER! Mind you, you've had over 200 previous attempts!
From my observation, your mind, sight and hearing are all still intact (your BOOB poems prove that your mind and sight are anyway and boobs are usually silent - like P in surf-bathing! LOL)
Pity this is a non-entry or I'd vote for it. Now I better get my entry done.
    Love Heathcote.

    3 essential items to have

    Dear Hugh,
You have chosen the three main essentials to take to the moon with you, for without them it would be a dreary new world to go to.
Well written Sonnet to be added to your Wyleian Sonnet list.
And I agree with Janice and Renee in everything they've said, totally! You will always have the love of family and friends and you ARE the Sonnet Master.
    Love Bea.

A good reminder of the important things we hold, Hugh. You've written these wisdom filled words with humour (another sense we should try to hang on to)and seriousness combined to make another of your wonderful sonnets.

    I love it
    Dee

What a choice poem and such truth. For without all the senses, woudl we have the depth to be all we mean to be to all else?

    YES YES YES

Such pleasure your talented mind brings. such wisdom that pours from your soul. Hugh, you certainly do need all those things, but if they all left you tomorrow, you will still be surrounded with your precious family and friends.

I agree wholeheartedly. I am getting on in years myself. I'll be fifty-three this year, Lord let me live to see it, and I am beginning (hopefully not a tad too late) to recognize that my health is most important and should have always been.

This is whimsical Hugh. It makes a very serious topic light and airy. You are the Master of Sonnets. I will never tire of reading yours although I don't as often as I wish. Excellent! Thanks for the reminder.

    Always ♥

    Renee
