You awoke this morning at eight A.M.,
rolled over and took another five.
They were returning from patrol,
tired out but glad to be alive.
You had ham and eggs for breakfast,
robed with slippers on your feet.
They went right straight to their bunks,
much too tired to eat.
You cursed at traffic going to work,
some people drive like clowns .
They were awakened within an hour,
to the sound of incoming rounds.
Since the birth of our great country,
someone has tried to take our freedoms away.
But there are those who protected us,
thank God there has always been a THEY.

I can't understand how i missed this one. I thought i had read them all. Now i will have to do the rounds here again. A beautiful piece which is spot on and an amzing write. Yes, if only people would realize what has been given and lost on their behalf, maybe they wouldn't be whinging so much about their lot in life. I love the flow and the rhythm very much. Congrats on the honourable win here. 2007....Your writes have always carried that very special flavour. Loved it heaps!

this is a great poem that really reflects the price of freedom. Far too many people abuse the gift soldiers offer and provide, without a second thought. It is an honour to read your poetry and wear the uniform with pride. Congrats on the HM, it was well earned

America the Beautiful
You are absolutely right!!
Why so many people don't appreciate the dedication and the sacrifices from these men and women to protect us...
Ok...I'm off on a tangent...
Just want to say OOOOHRAH!!!

I will second that. Thank God indeed that there has always been a THEY! This really touched my heart and you know with 9-11 coming upon and Labor Day and all the men and women still out in the battlefields performing their daily tasks, it's a good reminder of how lucky we are to be here... safe, sound, warm and cozy... even if trials face you and frustrations overcome you, they are nothing like these men and women face I am sure. Thank you for thinking of others and for entering my contest. As always, good luck!
