Life (written in 1996)

As I walk down the road,
I think of yesterday
and of its winding curves,
but I know I must look at today.

Throughout my life,
throughout the years,
I've had much laughter
and many, many tears.

Though none can match
this simple phrase:
when you look at life,
you'll see it's nothing more than a maze.

Life is such a simple thing,
short, and fragile, too.
I know sometimes it seems
that life has turned its back on you,

But you must keep going
for those whom love you so;
there's so much to learn in life,
so many beautiful things to know.

Author notes

Ok. I know it's simple and childish, and could be improved in so many ways... but I had to post this. I was looking back through my older poems (and being amazed at how much I've improved through the years) when I came across this little gem, written at age eleven! I realize it's not a great poem, but I thought the message was profound for that age. It's almost like it was a message to myself for the future, and is somewhat haunting in the fact that it seems like I was more mature then, at such a young age, then I am now. Sigmund Freud anyone?

Please tell me what you think

Life is intertwinment...intertwinement of fingers, of hearts, of desires, of longings, of interests, and its not that there are so many things to know, as there are many things to feel, to experience, to inhale. I have my own intertwinements, one which goes back half a millinea, the other 80 odd years, and they still flavor the current in most delectable ways.

Sometimes, things of beauty are simple, and this poem is a prime example; well done.

In addition, this poem reminded me of a piece that I wrote entitled, "Tomorrow, Yesterday and Today."

I was going to say that this was pretty darned good for 12, but it must have been before your birthday which is almost here so Happy Birthday! ~smile~ I liked it. I agree with your assessment that the message is profound for one so young. I hope it has reminded you of some things: where you're coming from and what is important to keep in mind.

    Beautifully written...

You are a thinker, you are a dreamer, you are a philosopher! This is an exceptional piece, and it's amazing to me that something this deep came from the pen of a child. Very well done, Poetess; my hat is off to you!! As they say here on AP, write on, shine on!!! Peace, Cyn

      thank you

I'm not so sure I'd be considered those things anymore - but 11 years ago I certainly seemed to be.
Thank you so much for your kind words.

    wow... amazing... not only

that you still have poetry that you wrote from when you were 11... but also that it is this good... quite good for an eleven year old... damn... quite a deep thinker you were, even half your life ago!

I must say... I am most certainly impressed...

I'm surprised that this came from an eleven year old.

Yes, life is many things: simple, complex...

I like the ending, the final two lines.

      thank you

I appreciate your comment. I was surprised, too, especially that this came from me. It's a stark contrast to my poetry now... but one I needed to see, and one I think everyone else should see this side of me too.
      Thanks again!!!

My favourite part in the poem.

It's a fab poem that we all need to read and understand at some point. ITs written with wisdom- and you wrote it when you were 11 !! Wow....

Sigmund Freud would prob say you got the wisdom from a man. Or something to do with a guy anyway. lol If i have to study anymore on that guy... lol...
Anyway the poem was very well written..

      LOL.. I like your comment!

You're probably right. Ok, maybe Sigmund Freud wasn't the right psychologist to allude to. I was thinking there was someone who said that people can revert to childhood in adulthood if they wasted their youth too wise for their years. Probably wasn't him. Well I'm not a psych major (anymore).
Thank you so much for your comment.
