They called us "hippies" or
"flower child' or 'freaks'
we turned on tuned in and dropped out
sought peace in socialistic communes
Ours was Woodstock, the Monterey Popps
and the Concert at Bangladesh,
the musical prose of Jim Morrison
The Moody Blues and Carlos Santana
From states of 'high' awareness
there came the dawn of quantum---
thought, philosophy and science;
Huxley, Hawkins, Sagan, the internet and more
We went straight, followed Bill
adapted his 12-steps to all addictions
and the many manifestations of depression
For 'pot-heads' we did a lot of good

Very good write here
I often wondered though if they had crack back then would you have fared the same .I know there was LSD and I have seen what it has done to some . It is the human way to try to fix whats broken often through drugs sad it is for it makes them lose all they had that was left and often their life .

A PHD tried to fix me with drugs and took away most of my free will in doing so. By the grace of God I recognized what was happening and why and weened myself from heavy doses lithium. When I explained my overall improvement to a more learned Psych, he began to take his other patients off the drug and quit prescribing it altogether

Good write. I'm sorry, but I don't remember the 60s at all and my memories of the 70s are sort of fading in and out. You say there was music?

i remember being pulled over by the cops in downtown Chicago when me and my buddies went to see the opening of the Bangladesh Concert movie.
in our panic, i popped the last 2 joints we had in my mouth to swallow them before we got busted.
i went through the cop stop, the drive to find parking, the walk to the theater, and was a 1/4 of the way into the flick before i was able to swallow it all. lol
not a real good idea to chew weeds when you have severe dry-mouth

and don't even ask me about Kickapoo Creek Rock Festival, where i discovered Orange Barrels

thanks for this great entry and the tale of yesteryear

grm, whether smoked of force fed to chew, a buzzzz is still a buzzzzz and cotton mouth always follows. Glad you made it safely to one of the best concerts of the century.

"From states of 'high' awareness"
I liked the word play there...perhaps the emphasis is more on "high" than awareness, lol
! This poem has a very authentic voice about it and I liked the transition from the hippy days to "internet days" - wow, yes, the world did change. And to think that many of today's "high society" where "pot-heads"...makes one think!
Nice work here - thank you for this entry.

Nicolette, true sometimes our 'Highs' were greater than our 'awareness'. Pot was cheap and easily attained and if caught, was a misdemeanor up to pound or more. As for Aldous Huxely, greatest essayist of the 20th century, his gig was peyote and LSD. And more than likely, Carl Sagan droppped a hit or two and burned a few 'fat ones' along the way.
These days, I'm eleven years clean, not thanks to Bill but to God. Enough was enough and at the age of 51, I did my last hit of acid.

Lol
As one born into those times I must say I traveled a different, or the other, path.the streets of Brooklyn and the draft did seem to make my life just a little differnt from the average hippie. But oh the music of those times was truly the greatest. Another gem though.

Bob, I went to enlist and wound 1-Y, so I became one of the many drug dazed. And I agree, the music was the best of the entire 20th century

Sometimes you write
the things that I should have written. I'm 10 years clean and sober and active in AA. I am envious that you wrote that piece. Well done.

Amazira, the movements of the 60's and 70's drew a lot of bad press. However, we made a very positive impact on the future we now live

ah, nostalgia just isn't what it used to be....

great read, you know I don't think really that it matter what you do or put within your body, it's how you live your life, love, and befreind that matters the most. Do what you will to invision the future. Well done.
