These Sacred Travels of Spirit: South Africa

Missing image

Sleep came softly upon this prairie,

carrying me to precious shores

where heart's thunder resides.

In the distance,

Kilimanjaro's snowcapped peaks were visible;

I felt my soul stand still,

enchanted by journeys I couldn't have foreseen.

Roaring lions echoed through my veins -

the proud trumpeting of elephants sang swiftly to me.

I heard seas caressing landscape

with ancient touches of knowledge and fire -

zebras danced in the Serengeti,

willful and serene in their strength.

Rising, I was stunned by these sacred travels of spirit,

my body still here in the plains,

surrounded by grey concrete

and golden wheat.

Artwork: "Ocean Dreams" by Jim Warren

Inspired by a very vivid dream I had. I know Mount Kilimanjaro is in
Tanzania & that the Serengeti lies across Tanzania & Kenya.
Nonetheless, my dream told me I was in South Africa.
Perhaps because I have two beloved friends that live there.

"Africa" by Toto

I hear the drums echoing tonight

But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation

She’s coming in 12:30 flight

The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation

I stopped an old man along the way

Hoping to find some long forgotten words or ancient melodies

He turned to me as if to say, hurry boy, its waiting there for you

It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you

There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do

I bless the rains down in Africa

Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

The wild dogs cry out in the night

As they grow restless longing for some solitary company

I know that I must do what’s right

Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti

I seek to cure what’s deep inside, frightened of this thing that I’ve become

Hurry boy, she’s waiting there for you

It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you

There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do

I bless the rains down in Africa, I bless the rains down in Africa

I bless the rains down in Africa, I bless the rains down in Africa

I bless the rains down in Africa

Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

I like your extensive author notes - you must be a teacher at heart.
These Sacred Travels of Spirit: South Africa

This is very wistful and telling of how dreams hold up our desires, parts of ourselves
S1 - I like that “where heart’s thunder resides” - what you’re missing, or the source you recognize
S2 - a captivating image - your soul, stilled, enchanted, under Kilimanjaro
    S3 - to end
All these things => the roar of lions in your blood, the trumpeting pride of elephants, the ancient land, the willful and serene zebras, resonates in you, speak to you regardless of where you are.

Thank you for your sensitive entry, an old memory that speaks to you.

Berry good take on the prompt, Good luck!
Liked the zebras secure in their strength. But it comes with the realization That I couldn't run away from much anymore...

    Yebo (Yes) !!

I knew your dream would become a poem, my friend ...and what a beautiful one. This poem is dreamy, yet it is so real in the way it captures Africa's beauty, especially South Africa's - you have painted your dream in all the colours of the rainbowland...and my, what a time we would have had!!

I just heard on the radio that the biggest diamond in the world was found here in South Africa yesterday...6 000 carats - as big as a sheep's head!!! This poem is a diamond too - just like you. So you better save some money or win the lottery so we can go on a safari together !! This one made me smile in capital letters!!

Your note stopped me commenting on your geography! lol! Having spent all of my childhood and most of my adolescence in South Africa, I can understand your fascination with the country. Africa has an atmosphere that I have never felt anywhere else and, I must admit that emotionally I am always drawn back. That is why so many of my poems reflect my South African childhood. I hope that your dream comes true one day and that you walk upon the veldt. Chris.
