Once, all cursed darkness
till waxy sentinels came,
reassuring with soft light
flickering~
illuminating shadowy stillness.
*
Fearful children
during storm’s rage
huddled next to it;
comforted, holding hope
where little existed.
*
Reticent humble scholars
coveted this necessity
till weary eyes gave way to
yawning bids then;
with a lick of the fingers~
down came night’s curtain.
*
Engendered conveniences
occasionally serving,
lighting our way, multiplied;
it is yet powerful.
*
Sometimes, stark
reminders
as we celebrate
another year’s passing
with reservations.
*
Humble vespers also
given in their presence
speak spiritual volumes,
as do longing, romantic looks
accented by its glow
over an intimate meal~

As it should be...
The many uses and occasions of candles are listed here in ways that kept me nodding, yes. It is not so much the humble source of light, as our need historically, and when storm loses electric light; the dependable light over the years of studying, convenience and celebration culminate in what matters most, candles at dinner with ones we love. Although long, it would have been incomplete without them all.
