mesmerizing
flickering flame
brightnesss of the blaze
fervor of the fire
holds my eyes
glued in place
with passion, intensity
I feel pulled into the centre
forgetting where I am
concentrating only
on the brightness
the heat, the pull
lost in thought
time ticks tardily by
immersed in introspection
nothing else matters
till the light ceases
darkness settles, I am back

Did you ever read, I think it was called, "The wonderful world of Henry Sugar" by Roald Dahl? Its the story of a man who teaches himself to gain all kinds of weird powers and he starts by concentrating on candle flames - this reminded me a lot of that. Brought back some happy childhood memories - thank you.

THat is a good description of watching a flame... It does mesmerize you. Great description.

I've been there! There has always been a fascination with flame--not the devouring inferno that rages out of control, but tame flame, such as in your candle.
Candles and fireplaces, outdoor campfires, all may be related through millennia to the life-sustaining source of warmth in caves... It is very late, and this comment can only have been written at 2:16 AM!!
